Qatar Warns Continued Strait of Hormuz Closure Risks Further Regional Escalation

The State of Qatar has warned that the continued closure of the Strait of Hormuz could lead to further escalation in the region, stressing that a prolonged disruption would harm the interests of all parties and add pressure to an already fragile regional environment.

The warning was delivered by Dr Majed bin Mohammed Al Ansari, Adviser to the Prime Minister and Official Spokesperson for the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, during the ministry’s weekly media briefing. He said Qatar had cautioned from the beginning against allowing the crisis surrounding the strait to remain unresolved or treating its closure as an established reality.

According to Al Ansari, Doha is continuing consultations and diplomatic contacts with regional and international partners in an effort to prevent renewed escalation and bring the parties back to negotiations. Qatar’s mediation efforts are being coordinated with partners including Oman and Pakistan, with the focus remaining on political solutions and restraint.

He said Qatar is working toward a peaceful settlement that would lead to the reopening of the Strait of Hormuz and help strengthen security and stability across the region. The waterway is one of the world’s most important maritime routes for energy exports, and prolonged disruption has consequences well beyond the Gulf.

Al Ansari noted that the impact of the current escalation has already extended to countries outside the region and has affected important sectors, including energy and pharmaceuticals. He stressed that reaching a diplomatic solution is therefore not only a regional priority, but also an issue with wider implications for the global economy and international supply chains.

Qatar Calls for Negotiations and Restraint

Qatar has repeatedly underlined that freedom of navigation through the Strait of Hormuz should be protected in accordance with international law. Doha has also argued that any lasting arrangement concerning the strategic waterway should be based on regional consensus and should preserve the security of shipping and the interests of all states in the region.

Al Ansari urged all sides to exercise wisdom, avoid steps that could widen the confrontation and give priority to the negotiating track. He said Qatar’s diplomatic position remains centred on de-escalation and on achieving a comprehensive political settlement capable of restoring normal maritime movement.

The Qatari spokesperson also rejected suggestions that the Gulf states’ international role had diminished. He pointed to the GCC countries’ economic weight, their international partnerships and their continuing role in mediation and conflict resolution, saying the Gulf had demonstrated resilience in previous crises.

The latest comments reinforce Qatar’s broader diplomatic approach to the regional crisis: maintaining open channels with the parties involved, coordinating with mediation partners and pushing for negotiations that can reduce tensions while safeguarding freedom of navigation and global economic interests.
